The stamps are being issued ahead of the semiquincentennial — or 250th anniversary — of the American Revolution and highlight five crucial battles in the Revolutionary War: Lexington and Concord; Bunker Hill; Trenton; Saratoga; and Yorktown.
The pane dedicates a row of stamps for each battle. A stamp’s image is either a photograph linked to the site or a watercolor illustration of a battle scene.
The rows and their battles are in chronological order, starting in 1775 with the two battles in Massachusetts, Lexington and Concord and Bunker Hill; Trenton, NJ, in 1776; Saratoga, NY, in 1777; and Yorktown, VA, in 1781.
A quote from Thomas Paine in the upper right of the pane begins, “These are the times that try men’s souls.”
Derry Noyes, an art director for USPS, designed the stamps with illustrations by Greg Harlin and photographs by Jon Bilous, Richard Lewis, Tom Morris, Gregory J. Parker and Kevin Stewart.
